The Power of Red Light Therapy- Why It Works and Why Patients Should Try It.

Red light therapy (RLT) is more than a wellness trend—it’s a science-backed treatment with a growing body of evidence supporting its benefits.

By integrating Bon Charge Red Light Therapy Blanket into your treatment protocols, Plus Forte is offering patients something that’s convenient, non-invasive, and potentially transformative.

What Is Red Light Therapy—and How Do These Blankets Work?

Red light therapy (also known as low-level laser therapy, photobiomodulation, or LED therapy) uses low-intensity red (around 660 nm) and near-infrared (around 850 nm) light. These wavelengths penetrate into the skin without heat and stimulate the mitochondria—the cell’s “powerhouse”—improving energy production and cellular repair. The Bon Charge blanket employs high irradiance and close proximity to deliver full-body sessions in 10–30 minutes. Unlike traditional panel designs where you treat the front then the back (one side at a time), the blanket treats both simultaneously—saving time and enhancing efficiency…think of it like a health-benefitting sleeping bag!

Benefits of RLT Blankets

  1. Muscle & Joint Recovery
Near-infrared light penetrates deeply to reduce inflammation, relieve muscle soreness, and encourage faster recovery—especially helpful after physical activity such as physical therapy or personal training sessions.

  2. Skin Health & Rejuvenation
RLT stimulates collagen production and improves skin tone, helping reduce fine lines, wrinkles, scars, redness, and acne….so there is a cosmetic benefit too!

  3. Improved Sleep & Energy
By supporting cellular energy, RLT may enhance overall energy levels and promote better sleep via relaxation effects. I can personally attest to the better. I tried it one evening around 6pm after a long walk and it was one of the better night sleep’s I’ve had.

  4. Wellness & Recovery on the Go
The blanket’s design delivers full-body sessions more efficiently—not just effective but user-friendly. This allows our patients to get as much benefit as possible n a short amount of time.

  5. Cellular Support & Mood
While subtler, RLT supports cellular regeneration, mood regulation, and general wellbeing in a non-invasive format. So…maybe your mood will improve and you’ll feel happier after you leave the clinic…another win!

How we choose to integrate it into our treatment plans at the clinic:

  • Start small: We suggest beginning with short sessions (e.g., 10–15 minutes), this allows us to monitor the patient’s comfort level and adjust accordingly.

  • Track progress: We like to use physical assessments, patient subjective reports/journals, or simple surveys to measure improvements in muscle recovery, movement, sleep, pain, mood, or skin.

  • Pair with other therapies: Ideally, RLT sessions will be after a training session, dry needling session, or physical therapy session in order to see the greatest benefits.

  • Consistency over intensity: We recommend several/frequent shorter sessions for the greatest benefit and lowest risk for adverse effects.

Who cannot or should speak to their doctor before using RLT?

Contraindications (avoid use)

  • Pregnancy – safety isn’t well-established; best to avoid full-body exposure.

  • Active cancer or history of skin cancer – because light stimulates cellular activity.

  • Epilepsy / light-induced seizures – especially if flickering lights are a trigger.

  • Active bleeding or open wounds – RLT can increase circulation and delay clotting.

  • Thyroid disorders (avoid direct exposure to the thyroid gland).

  • Patients on photosensitizing medications (e.g., some antibiotics, chemotherapy, or psychiatric meds).

Precautions (Speak to your MD and/or self-monitor):

  • Children & adolescents – only with medical supervision/clearance.

  • Cardiac conditions or implanted devices (pacemakers, defibrillators) – research is limited, so check with the cardiologist.

  • Recent steroid injections or photosensitive topical creams – may increase irritation or reaction.

  • History of migraines – bright light exposure may sometimes trigger symptoms.

  • Skin sensitivity – those with eczema, psoriasis, or very fair/sensitive skin may need shorter sessions.

  • Eye exposure – always recommend protective goggles or keeping eyes closed; never stare directly into LEDs.
